Fall Protection Harness User Information
Wearers of Fall Arrest Safety Harnesses should be trained in its safe use and the applications
it is designed to be used in. This should include fit and adjustment, selection of attachment devices and selection of a suitable
anchor point.
All
fall protection equipment made from synthetic fibres available for use and worn by an employee should be inspected by the
user prior to use each and every time it is used (for which they should have been trained to do so) and at least every 6 months
should be subjected to a detailed Inspection by a competent person. The actual frequency of the detailed Inspection by the
competent person should be deemed through ‘risk assessment’ taking into account the frequency of use and the environment
it is being used in. The competent person carrying out the detailed Inspection should have specific training to inspect fall
protection PPE.
How to Don a Fall Protection
Harness
Properly donning a harness can mean the difference between life and serious injury or death.
The following quick step by step guide explains how to correctly wear your fall protection harness.
Step One: Inspect Harness Always
inspect your fall protection harness before wearing and check for wear & tear ensuring all of the webbing and stitching
is intact and the hardware has not been damaged, cracked, bent or corroded.
Step
Two: Holding The Harness Grab your harness by the back d-ring (dorsal d-ring)
and shake the fall protection harness so all of the straps dangle. Then detangle any tangled straps and if any of the buckles
are buckled, unbuckle them.
Step Three: Shoulder Straps
Locate the shoulder straps and slip over your shoulders making sure that none
of the webbing is twisted and that the d-ring is located in the middle of your back.
Step
Four: Leg Straps Now reach and grab the leg straps hanging between
your legs, pulling each strap between your legs connecting them while ensuring the strap has not become twisted. Then tighten
each leg straps tucking the excess webbing into the leg strap holders.
Step
Five: Chest Buckle Connect the chest buckle tighten it ensuring the
shoulder straps are taut.
Step Six: Waist Buckle (If Applicable) If you're fall protection harness has a waist buckle connect it and tighten
it tucking any excess webbing into the strap holder.
Step Seven:
Adjust Fit Now make any required adjustment to your harness
straps to ensure that the harness is snug but not tight. You don't want it restricting your movement but a harness which
is too loose can seriously harm you or kill you in the event of a fall. Make sure your
harness fits securely to your body and any loose straps are tucked into the strap holders.
